Abstract Nocturnes

22/12/2016 - 00:39

The vibrant tones of the decorative lights at the last Totnes Christmas Market of 2016 offered great opportunities for abstract ICM photography.

The busy vibrant High Street stalls

These markets are full of energy - the wandering and curious shoppers searching for gifts; street food stalls with wonderful aromatics of world cuisine; blues bands, solo performers, fire poi spinners to entertain the crowds. Myraid colours from the tented stalls, fairy lights, glow sticks, illuminated wands and light sticks for sale to eager kids.

Inspired by the 'Nocturnes' of James Abbott McNeill Whistler and the impressionistic works of JMW Turner, I relished the chance to make some ICM (intentional camera movement) abstractions of the energetic market atmosphere.

The exposures ranged from 1.5 to 4 seconds, motions included zoom bursts (back and forth zooming in and out), small loops and figure-eights...

Making this set of photographs as an impressionistic response to the vibrancy of the Totnes Christmas Market, was a very enjoyable study.

Hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,
